5 Expectations To Forget This Year

Expectations from others

Expectations lobbed on you from others can carry some serious weight in your mind. Constantly worrying about what others think of you can put so much stress on your conscience.

Consider yourself and your goals. What are the reasons behind the actions you’re taking? If you know in your heart that what you’re doing is the best for you, it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. Go against the grain, if it means being true to yourself. Risk ridicule of your peers, and do not falter.

Perfection

No one is perfect, and that includes you. Things don’t always work out how you planned, and no matter how hard you try you’ll never attain perfection. Mistakes will be made, bad choices will be made, and people will be hurt. This is the nature of life. Everyone’s human, things happen. Don’t give yourself a hard time for these mistakes and don’t let anyone else rake you over the coals for them either.

Set aside time to reflect on yourself and your actions, the motives behind what you say and do. Be intentional about these things, don’t throw around words like nothing.

Disappointment

Disappointment is a painful feeling. Whenever you come across this emotion, don’t try to run away from it. Sit and let yourself feel it, but don’t blame anyone for it. This won’t make you feel any less disappointed, of course, but taking a step back and really thinking about things will help you see the bigger picture.

Sometimes, you just need to acknowledge the situation and try to move on, ruminating on your disappointment and how much you wish things were different won’t be helpful to you in the long run. There will be more, and better, opportunities in the future if you just keep going.

Perspective

Whenever things end up differently than we planned, we can’t help but get a little resentful and disappointed about it. We’ll fixate on what could have been, and how unfairly we’re being treated by the world. But this is a toxic mindset to have, those spiraling negative thoughts will only hurt you in the end. Step back and make peace with your failures and missed opportunities.

Try to find the silver linings.

Desire

Sometimes, the desire for something will drive you forward, chasing your goal with a single-minded focus. But other times it’s the opposite: you just find yourself spinning your wheels and getting nothing but frustration out of it.

Times like this require a pause. Center yourself, take a breath, and realize it’s not the end of the world.
